The role and common misconceptions of lubricating oil in air compressors
Aug 07 , 2025

Air compressors have extremely stringent requirements for lubricating oil. Therefore, correctly selecting and properly lubricating compressor oil is a crucial measure to ensure the safe and stable operation of the compressor. Let’s take a closer look at the functions of air compressor lubricating oil and the common misconceptions surrounding its use.

Functions of Lubricating Oil

Lubricating oil serves purposes such as lubrication and cooling. After entering the bearings, due to adhesion, the oil rotates with the shaft, forming an oil film that lifts the rotating shaft, enabling liquid lubrication between the bearing bush and journal. This ensures long-term smooth operation of the unit.

Factors Affecting the Performance of Screw Compressor Lubricating Oil

As the operating time of the lubricating oil increases, impurities gradually accumulate, significantly reducing its lubrication performance and effectiveness. The main factors affecting the lubrication performance of the oil are as follows:

1. Moisture Contamination**: During operation, if the operating temperature is too low, moisture may condense and mix with the oil, contaminating it and impairing its lubrication performance.

2. Particle Contamination**: Over long-term operation, particles and other debris generated by friction and wear can enter the oil, affecting lubrication.

3. External Contamination**: Improper handling during storage, addition, or operation may introduce dust, metal particles, or other oils, polluting the lubricant.

4. Corrosive Gases**: During operation, failure of shaft seals, system fluctuations, or operational errors can allow harmful gases (e.g., chlorine, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide) to leak into the oil. These corrosive gases not only contaminate the oil and degrade its lubrication performance but also corrode pipelines, valves, and equipment in the lubrication system, further contaminating the oil.

Common Misconceptions in Lubricating Oil Use

During compressor operation, intense friction occurs due to structural changes in components, making it necessary to convert solid friction into liquid friction. To fully leverage the role of lubricating oil—ensuring reliable lubrication, reducing wear, and extending the compressor’s service life—it is essential to pay close attention to the selection and use of compressor oil. However, some maintenance personnel often hold misconceptions about lubricating oil usage, leading to unnecessary losses.
