Application of Air Compressors in the Sewage Treatment Industry
Apr 30 , 2026

Guided by the dual-carbon goals, the sewage treatment industry is accelerating its development toward high efficiency, energy conservation and environmental protection. As a core power equipment, air compressors deliver stable and clean compressed air throughout the entire processes of sewage biochemical treatment, solid-liquid separation, sludge disposal and instrument control, serving as a crucial support for compliant sewage discharge, energy conservation and carbon reduction.

I. Biochemical Aeration: The Oxygen Supply Engine at the Core of Purification

Aeration is the core link of sewage treatment. Air compressors supply continuous and stable compressed air for processes such as the activated sludge method and biological filters. Microbubbles released through aeration discs provide oxygen for aerobic microorganisms, accelerating their decomposition of organic pollutants in sewage and greatly improving purification efficiency. Statistics show that approximately 90% of organic matter can be removed when wastewater stays in the aeration tank for 4 to 6 hours. Municipal sewage plants mostly adopt screw or centrifugal air compressors, which feature large flow capacity and high energy efficiency to meet the demand for long-term continuous operation. Variable-frequency models can adjust output according to actual load, achieving an energy-saving effect of 20%-30%.

II. Air Flotation Separation: An Efficient Assistant for Solid-Liquid Purification

The air flotation process generates massive microbubbles with compressed air, which adsorb impurities such as grease, suspended solids and colloidal particles in sewage. These impurities float to the water surface to form scum, enabling rapid solid-liquid separation. Widely applied in the treatment of industrial oily sewage and high-suspended-solids wastewater, this process relies on the stable air pressure provided by air compressors to ensure uniform and fine bubbles, improve separation accuracy and efficiency, and reduce the load of subsequent treatment procedures.

III. Sludge Disposal: Power Guarantee for Sludge Reduction

Large volumes of sludge produced during sewage treatment require disposal through dehydration, drying and other processes. Air compressors play a vital role in sludge treatment. Firstly, they drive pneumatic diaphragm pumps and plate-and-frame filter presses to apply uniform pressure on sludge, lowering its moisture content, reducing volume and weight, and facilitating subsequent transportation and disposal. Secondly, they are used for sludge pipeline purging and equipment dust cleaning to prevent blockages and ensure the smooth operation of the sludge conveying system.

IV. Instrument & Valve Control: Precise Support for Intelligent Operation and Maintenance

In sewage treatment systems, a large number of pneumatic valves, actuators and online monitoring instruments are driven and controlled by compressed air. The clean compressed air supplied by air compressors enables precise control of valve switching and flow regulation. Adaptable to the humid and corrosive environment of sewage plants, it delivers rapid response and stable performance, facilitating automated and intelligent operation and maintenance of sewage treatment, and ensuring coordinated and precise operation of all process links.

V. Other Auxiliary Applications

Beyond core processes, air compressors are also applied in various daily operation and maintenance scenarios of sewage treatment plants, including gas replacement in sewage tanks, purging of toxic and harmful gases, pipeline dredging, and power supply for pneumatic tools in equipment maintenance, fully covering daily operational needs.

VI. Selection Guidelines: Scenario Adaptation with Energy Conservation as the Priority

The selection of air compressors for the sewage treatment industry must take stability, energy efficiency and air quality into account. Large-scale municipal sewage plants give priority to centrifugal air compressors for their large flow capacity, oil-free clean air and high energy efficiency. Variable-frequency screw air compressors are ideal for small and medium-sized sewage plants and industrial wastewater treatment stations, featuring flexible adjustment and outstanding energy-saving performance. For processes with high air quality requirements, oil-free air compressors shall be adopted to prevent oil contamination of water quality and equipment.

Regarded as the "green power heart" of sewage treatment, air compressors empower the whole sewage treatment process with high-efficiency, clean and reliable compressed air, helping the industry achieve the dual goals of compliant discharge as well as energy conservation and carbon reduction. Selecting a well-adapted air compressor is a critical step for sewage plants to realize stable operation, cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
